Jungheinrich ensures a smooth run of storage processes in the Logistics Park CALM of Almaty in Kazakhstan. Apart from electric counterbalance trucks, pedestrian stackers and pallet trucks, Jungheinrich reach trucks, type ETV 320, also stand their ground.
The Kazakhstan government reacted promptly to the rapid economic growth in their country during the past few years and has started various politico-economical projects. The Kazakhstan Central Asian Logistics Management (CALM) corporation is responsible for a project that is part of the comprehensive measures package. The corporation runs the Logistics Park CALM not far from the international airport Almaty.
Supported by Russian logistics specialists, the company was founded in February 2006 and is now one hundred percent in Kazakhstan hands. Among the partners of CALM are the Paragon Development LLP, an investment company whose aim is to develop logistics centres in Kazakhstan and Central Asia, and JSC-Astana-Contract. The latter is a leading container transport company in Kazakhstan.
Logistics Park CALM: every storage opportunity provided
With a storage area of 48,500 square metres, the distribution warehouse provides storage for a total of 70,000 pallets. About 200 people work for CALM. The current turnover per month is 25,000 pallets. Apart from an excellent connection to the public road network, the Logistics Park also has its own container park and railway connection. The terminals erected so far open up every opportunity for storage under one roof: racking warehouse, floor storage, small parts storage, cold storage and customs warehouse.
Goods arriving from China, Russia and Europe (mainly consumer goods) are delivered from Almaty to large shops and chain stores all over Kazakhstan. To become market leader in the operation of Logistics Parks in Kazakhstan, the CALM corporation also bets on a branch professional for mastering their own logistics tasks: a company located in Hamburg and operating worldwide – Jungheinrich. The co-operation between the German and Kazakhstan companies is running very smoothly, because the logistics processes in Central Asia are basically the same as in Europe.
Arriving lorries are offloaded via docking stations with Jungheinrich hand pallet trucks, type AM 2200, and placed in readiness at goods-in. A similar process applies to goods that arrive per railway. Offloading here is carried out from the opposite side of the warehouse. Delivered goods are subsequently checked and taken to the designated storage positions with Jungheinrich reach trucks, type ETV 320. Deliveries take the same route in reverse direction.
Jungheinrich reach trucks: excellent economic efficiency
The ETV 320 is a very powerful truck. Due to consistent application of 3-phase AC technology on all drives (travelling, lifting and steering), the reach truck from Jungheinrich achieves a very high throughput with reduced maintenance at the same time. The truck’s high economic efficiency is underlined by energy reclamation during braking and load lowering. The ETV 320 is able to stack loads up to 2000 kilogram at heights of over 12 metres.
The Jungheinrich reach truck did not only convince those responsible at CALM through its performance efficiency. “The ergonomics of the truck are complete tailored to fork lift truck operators”, explains Oleg Zaytsev, Jungheinrich dealer in the seventh largest country of the world. “This is not yet so in evidence here.“ The operator gets to his workplace comfortably via a lowered entry. His workplace is equipped with a three-fold adjustable seat, an adjustable armrest, the MULTI PILOT control lever and a steplessly adjustable steering wheel in both vertical and horizontal direction.
Over 50 Jungheinrich fork lift trucks in the entire Logistics Park CALM currently ensure the smooth run of all storage processes. Apart from ETV 320 reach trucks, there are EFG 213 electric counterbalance trucks as well as EJE 220 electric pedestrian pallet trucks and EJC 216 electric pedestrian stackers in operation. Added to this are several dozen AM 2200 hand pallet trucks.
Igor Bekrenyov: “Jungheinrich made the best offer!“
In the words of Igor Bekrenyov, General Manager of CALM, the decision to go with Jungheinrich was not made lightly and several quotations were obtained. But “we were enthusiastic about the conditions offered by Jungheinrich here in Almaty“, recounts Bekrenyov. An added advantage was the choice of electric trucks offered. “We only use electrically powered trucks in our Logistics Park and again, the best offer was made by Jungheinrich.” “Time will show how many trucks will actually be required”, the logistics expert continues. At the start, the warehouse in operation since June 2007 had 70 percent utilisation and this was increased slowly over the next few months.
CALM and Jungheinrich initially agreed a kind of stand-by service. “One of our Service Engineers will be on site immediately something has to be seen to on a truck. This is typical for a classical maintenance contract“, Oleg Zaytsev recounts. But still, CALM is also considering a Full Service contract for the trucks in the future. Igor Bekrenyov knows: “Service is important and we have never had a service problem with Jungheinrich.”
Igor Bekrenyov speaks here with years of experience. He has worked for many years in different Russian logistics companies where he gathered his experience regarding fork lift trucks. His conclusion: “Jungheinrich has always been the right choice.“
This is now also confirmed by the operators at CALM. This terminal is the first of this size for the operators. “Nobody had any experience in this connection,” says Bekrenyov. It was therefore important for the success of this project to have the right trucks. “The quality, dealing with the customer and the service as we know it from Jungheinrich are indispensable for projects of this size.“
This also applies to follow-up projects. The business module of CALM is developing very positively and expansions are already thought about. The construction of a Logistics Park in the Kazakhstan capital Astana already started in spring 2008. Others are to follow.
